近年、MRIがfirst choiceとなりつつある頭部領域だが、こうした状況では、頭部単純CTは撮影時に検査目的が限定的である場合が多く、目的ごとの撮影プロトコール設定が望ましい。また、近年の装置技術により、条件がコントロールされたヘリカルスキャンは、多くの情報提供を可能にするが、撮影範囲の延長による被ばくなど考慮すべき問題もある。
The reply to which imaging modality is better for imaging the head is dependent on the purpose of the examination. CT and MRI are each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Head CT is much faster than other modality, making it the study of choice in cases of trauma and other acute neurological emergencies. Head MRI has a much greater range of available soft tissue contrast, depicts anatomy in greater detail. The choice of how radiation dose is appropriate depends upon how contrast it is necessary to separate the cortex, and detect brain edema or ischemia.
