現在、乳がん検診に推奨されている検査方法はマンモグラフィである。その得られた画像の乳腺濃度は、がん発見に影響を及ぼす。特に高濃度乳房は発がんリスクの高い所見の一つとされているため、高濃度乳房の受診者には更なる検査(超音波検査やMRIなど)が推薦されている。そこで乳腺密度を明確にするため、デジタル値の相関性に着目した新しい手法が注目されている。この手法はX線画像作成のための線減弱係数とデジタル値の関係から、乳房内部における乳腺組織と脂肪の組織を計算している。
Mammography is the currently accepted breast cancer screening. Breast density often affects cancer detection via mammography. Breast density is one of the strongest breast cancer risk factors. Because of this, additional breast cancer screenings(US,MRI,etc.) are recommended for women with dense breasts. The methods for volumetric breast density estimation from mammograms have been proposed. These methods are based on a physics based model of the X-ray image acquisition process and assume that the breast tissue consists of fat and breast tissue. By knowing the X-ray attenuation of these tissues, tissue composition at a given pixel can be computed.
